Head Coach

Mark Woo is well known in the Southern Ontario debate community. With 22 years of experience in organizing large/prestigious competitions to coaching his private/public school students to great heights and success both locally and internationally, Mark Woo understands the debate competition circuit and what students need to challenge themselves, thrive, and succeed. Mark Woo offers a number of learning opportunities such as classroom instruction, private tutoring, and personal competition coaching. Mark Woo travels to all the significant competitions and is familiar with how unique they all are.

Mark Woo has developed a number of specialized programs for British Parliamentary Debate, Public Speaking, AP Courses in the Social Sciences, and of course Model United Nations Debate. Mark Woo’s students have won debate competitions at Cornell, McGill, Yale, Vancouver, Ottawa, and Harvard.

Katelyn Wang is a first-year medical student at the University of Ottawa, who completed her undergraduate studies in Pathobiology and Global Health at the University of Toronto. With over 7 years of competitive debate experience, she has won a number of tournaments, including the York University Debate Competition in high school, and the Central Novice Championships in university. In total, she has made it to “out rounds” (e.g., quarterfinals, semifinals, finals) at over 15 tournaments, and has consistently placed within the top 15 speakers in 10 tournaments. As a debate coach, judge and mentor, she has delivered training for 6 years for a range of students, from beginners and young children to students preparing for international debate tournaments at the university level. She has extensive judging experience, including the Novice Final of Winter Carnival in 2019, and the finals of Hart House High Schools in 2020.

Halina is a Political Science student at McGill University . Throughout her debate career, Halina has travelled to numerous countries for competitive debate, and attended many international tournaments. Some highlights includes: 

 • Harvard Debate: PD-Octofinalist, 8th ranking team out of 188 teams, 10th best speaker (out of nearly 800 debaters).

 • Western University, University of Toronto, and York University Debate Finalist.

 • Queens University and University of Waterloo Debate Semifinalist.

university debate qualifications are:

• Central Novice 5th speaker and Grand Finalist.

• Chancellor’s Cup 4th speaker and Grand Finalist.

 

• Selected to represent my school at the World University Debate Championships.

 

Michael Rubenstein was born in Montreal, Quebec and attended Dawson College CEGEP and then Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, Quebec. He is a lawyer, legal counsel, and counsellor, and has taught many public speaking, debating and communication courses to children and young adults for more than 25 years. He has been endorsed by many people in things such as speeches, talking skills and more. He also teaches law, business, and social sciences, part-time at colleges and universities.

Larry is an undergraduate student at the University of Toronto’s Rotman Commerce School of Business. He has broken as a debater at several debate tournaments, including the University of Waterloo High School Tournament in 2021 and most recently the Leger Cup 2023. He also has broken at a Judge at Hart House High Schools 2023, and Chaired Octofinals and judged semifinals at the 2023 Stanford WSDC Invitational. He is incredibly passionate about debate.
